Tutorial - Card cash mini wallet with zipper closure

This is an add-on tutorial for the card cash mini wallet, a pattern by Sudesh Jangra for Home Maker's Hustle Sewing Patterns. It has 4 card slots, a key fob and a main slot for folded bills.

You can purchase the wallet pattern here.

When the pattern was first released, I did a version with main zipper closure and a zipper pocket at the back for coins. I had to close down my previous website and the tutorial was lost.

I finally got around to writing the tutorial again. So here it is.

Materials :

In addition to the material list given in the pattern, you will need the following

Zipper pocket - Cut 2 fabric of  dimensions 5.75" ( width ) x 4.5" ( height )
#3 Zipper - 7.5" for main closure
#3 Zipper - 5.75" for zipper pocket

Seam Allowance :

1/4 " seam allowance with stitch length 2.5.
1/8" seam allowance for top stitching with stitch length 3.

Construction :

Follow the pattern to construct the front panel with card slots, tab with key fob and the flap.

Attach the male magnetic snap to the flap and female magnetic snap to the front panel, as per the instructions given in the pattern.

On the wrong side of one of the zipper pocket panels, measure down 1" from the top edge and draw a rectangle that is 4.75" in width and 1/2" in height and centered.
Draw a horizontal line in the center of the rectangle that is 1/2" inside from either  short sides. Connect the center line to either short sides of the rectangle, forming triangles  as shown in the picture above.

Place the back panel right side up and the zipper panel with the marked rectangle, right side down on top of it such that their right sides are together and their centers are aligned. You will notice that the zipper panel is 1/4" shorter than the back panel on all four sides. Pin the panels in place.

Sew over the rectangle.

Cut on the center horizontal line and also the triangles on either side to make an opening as shown in the picture above. Do not snip into the stitches.

Pull the zipper panel out through the opening so that the back panel and zipper panel are wrong sides together. The opening should look like the one shown in the picture above.

Pick up the zipper that is 5.75". You can trim longer zipper to this length. Make sure to sew over the open edge of the zipper as shown in the picture above. Use shorter stitch length to help hold the ends tightly in place.

Place the zipper behind the opening such that it's ends match with the side edges of the zipper pocket panel. It should look like this when seen from the front. Pin the zipper in place.

Sew around the zipper with a stitch length of 3.

Place the back panel right side down. Place the other zipper pocket panel over the first zipper pocket panel such that their right sides are together. Fold the bottom edges of each zipper pocket panel half inch towards it's respective wrong side.

Make sure the back panel is not pinned to the zipper panels.

Sew the zipper pocket panels starting from left bottom corner up to the top left corner, across the top edge and down to the right bottom corner. Leave the bottom edge open.

***When I stitch, I like to do this with back panel facing up so I can be sure that I am not sewing into it.

Place the front panel with card slots right side up and place the flap on top of it such that their top edges are aligned and centered.

Baste the flap to the front panel.

*** You can also attach the flap to the back panel following the same instructions. That way the flap will cover the zipper too. It is all about preference, nothing more.

Take the back panel with the zipper pocket and place it right side up. Measure down 1" from the top left corner. Place the tab for the key fob on the mark and baste it. You can see that almost half of the tab is sticking out.

***Make sure that the key fob is facing inside , that is towards the zipper pocket.

Let us put together the wallet. Now you should have a zipper for main closure and 4 panels - front panel with the flap attached, back panel with the zipper pocket and key fob and two lining panels.

Mark the center of the zipper and also on one of the lining panels.

Place the lining panel right side up. Place the zipper on it , also right side up and with their centers aligned,

Baste the zipper to the lining panel with 1/8" seam allowance or as close to the edge as possible.

Place the front panel right side down over the zipper, again with the centers aligned. Sew with 1/4" seam allowance.

This is how it looks when the panels are laid flat.

Flip the panels, such that their right sides are together. Use pins or wonder clips on the sides to hold the panels in place and top stitch.

I top stitched from under the flap. You can do it over the flap too if you like. Like I said before - all about preferences.

Now, following the same steps, attach the back panel and the other lining panel to the other open edge of the zipper.

Trim the extra zipper on the sides.

Pin the exterior panels ( front and back ) right sides together. Similarly, pin the lining panels right sides together. Make sure that the zipper teeth are towards the lining.

***Also make sure that both the main and the pocket zippers are open.

Fold the bottom unsewn side of the zipper pocket up so it is away from the stitching line.

Sew around all the four sides.

Trim the corners.

Turn the wallet out through the opening in the zipper pocket.

Sew the opening close.

Give a nice press. Do not press over the zipper and the metal snaps. Your wallet is ready to use.

Hope this tutorial helped.
